What happened on Tuesday evening at the Olivastre municipal leisure center, on the Giens peninsula

Instead of a vigil planned for thirteen adolescents aged 14 to 17, there was an intervention by the national police services in the middle of an evening which degenerated.

The director (a woman in her fifties) and a 30-year-old facilitator recruited for this three-day stay, left the center at the end of the day and returned some time later after having consumed alcohol in a campsite on the peninsula.

Placed in a sobering up cell

The thirteen teenagers were then left during this absence under the responsibility of a second facilitator, aged 18. It was the latter who, faced with a situation which was degenerating due to the behavior of the director and the host, alerted the Hyères police station.

Aggressive comments made against children are mentioned.

The two people were placed in a sobering up cell before being questioned in police custody.

On Thursday, this placement was lifted. The director and the monitor were released.

Acting as part of a preliminary investigation, the police interviewed the teenagers present on the evening of the incident and do not intend to communicate the circumstances of the case.

A complaint filed by a parent

On social networks, the mother of one of the teenagers welcomed at the center of Olivastre reported a complaint and his panic on Tuesday evening when the police asked him to come and pick up his son because two entertainers had consumed more alcohol than was necessary.

Jean-Pierre Giran, the mayor, confirmed the suspension order of the director and the host, pending an administrative investigation by the Department of Social Cohesion.

In this still unclear matter, only investigations and hearings will be able to identify (or not) the grounds for prosecution.

The director speaks on social networks

This Friday morning, the director, who has been in office for twenty years, spoke out on Facebook in a message in which she acknowledged her mistakes.

Suspended from her post – ”which is normal” she specifies - she admits having made a “huge mistake on Tuesday”, while specifying that children “were safe within the Olivastre enclosure. [and] you should know that teenagers can have free time without a leader during the day, which has never happened before”.

She indicates in particular that she has been practicing this profession with passion alongside many young people from Hyères for many years.
